The Beaver Police Department we would like to share a few safety tips and reminders for this holiday season.

The holidays are a great time to get to know your neighbors

The holiday season is a great time to get to know your neighbors. This includes the people who live next door, across the street and over the back fence. Neighbors watching out for neighbors help keep an eye out for suspicious activity and make communities safer.

Stay alert to surroundings when in parking lots and shopping areas.

Be alert when in crowded places. Don’t overload yourself with packages. Be wary of strangers approaching you for any reason. Recognize that there is safety in numbers and arrange to shop with friends and relatives instead of going out alone. Make sure everyone remains vigilant and looks out for each other. When shopping with children, keep a close eye on them at all times. Give children a contact phone number that they can carry on their person in case they do become lost.

Holiday Safety Tips for Online Shoppers

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular. There are risks to the internet so it is important to take steps to protect yourself when shopping online. Make sure your firewall anti-spyware and anti-virus are installed and up-to-date. Focus on signs that the site is secure. This includes a closed padlock on your Web browser’s address bar or a URL address that begins with shttp or https. This indicates that the purchase is encrypted or secured. Never use unsecured wireless networks to make an online purchase. Always be sure that you are entering credit card and personal information into a secure website. Never send cash through the mail or use a money-wiring service because you’ll have no recourse if something goes wrong. Be cautious of scams that ask you to send money transfers via Western Union or online. Contact the Beaver Police Department is you feel that you may be part of a scam.

Home and Vehicle Safety Tips for the Holidays

Be vigilant. Make sure that all your windows, and doors are locked and secured before leaving your residence. Let you children known not to open doors for people that they do not recognize prior to your knowledge. Ask a neighbor or other dependable persons to watch your house and retrieve your newspapers and mail when you are away for an extended period of time. Don’t leave valuable items in plain view for people to look in and see. LOCK ALL doors to your vehicle, and take all personal and valuable items out of your vehicle overnight or when exiting and entering.
