Book It to the Library this Fall!

The Beaver Area Memorial Library (BAML) has been a staple in the Beaver community since it began in a small basement in the 1940s. This treasured part of our town is frequented by residents of all ages. Did you know that the library not only offers a great collection of books, but so much more? The library is overflowing with books, activities, and events hosted for all – from the smallest newborns to the senior residents in Beaver.

Jennifer Cribbs is the Beaver Area Memorial Library’s Children Librarian, and she has exciting and educational events planned for the children and teens in Beaver this fall. If you have any questions about the upcoming events below, Miss Jen will be happy to answer them! Contact the BAML at 724-775-1132.

Story Times: We offer three Story Times: Preschool, Toddler Time, Baby & Me. No registration is required for these fun events, and siblings are welcome! Plus, you’ll be able to build your baby’s library during Baby & Me times as kids get to take home a free board book!

PAWS for Reading: Readers in grades PreK-5 are invited to practice reading aloud to a certified therapy dog! The Beaver Library currently partners with four dogs and their owners. Interested families should complete the registration form at www.beaverlibrary.com/register or contact Miss Jen.

Play K Program: These great sessions help prepare rising kindergartners for the upcoming school year. We offered an online format this past school year with “Camp Kindergarten” kit boxes to check out for the summer. We’re hoping for in-person sessions again beginning this fall. Check out our website for updates.

Writing Programs for Teens: We regularly offer writing workshops for students in grades 5+. We’re planning for a writing workshop around Halloween!

Palettes & Pajamas: This fun, family art program is offered once per season at the library. Be sure to check online for the fall date.

STEAM Days: These events are geared for students grades 1-6. STEAM incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics in a fun, approachable way. Each session features 3-4 projects or challenges that encourage participants to use their creativity and reasoning skills. We’ll be featuring a STEAM Day one evening per month this fall.

On top of the amazing offerings coming up for the youth of our town, our Adult Services Librarian Nicole Brockman also has some great adult programs in the works.

Beaver Tales: Join us at the library on Friday, September 17th at 12:00pm for an afternoon of tales tall & true with Judi Tarosky as part of this year’s Beaver Tales event, sponsored by the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation. Stop into the library to reserve your spot today!

Seniors for Safe Driving at the BAML: A driver improvement course for drivers 55 years of age and older. Class date is October 22, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuition is $16.00 per person, due prior to the class date. Register by telephone (1-800-599-4880) or online (www.seniorsforsafedriving.com).

Fall Fundraiser: This annual fundraiser event for the library is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th. Many raffle baskets will be on display throughout the library prior to the event. A variety of items will be sold on a cash basis in two popular boutiques. The Unique Boutique will include a wide variety of new and gently used items. The BAML Knit & Crochet Club will feature a variety of hand-knitted and hand-crocheted creations. Mark your calendars to join us for this fun event!

Stay up to date with all the library’s programs and events by visiting the library, liking our Facebook page, subscribing to the library newsletter, and visiting our website at www.beaverlibrary.com.

With the cool fall weather on its way, it’s the perfect time to cozy up inside and catch up on your reading list or find your next great read. For inspiration, be sure to take a look at our shelf of staff picks! The interests across the library staff vary from mystery fiction to biographies and everything in between, so there’s bound to be something that appeals to you. Each book is complete with a staff write-up to guide your choice. Feel free to ask any of our librarians for a recommendation as well – it should be no surprise that we love to talk about books!

Have a specific item you’re looking to check out from the library and not finding what you’re looking for? We offer interlibrary loans (ILLs) for any title that is over one year old! If the book is not within Beaver County, we will search libraries across PA and surrounding states to locate a copy of the book/audiobook/CD for you. ILLs can be checked out for two weeks. If there’s a new book you’re looking for that’s not in our collection, you can fill out a new book request form for the library to purchase it.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us! Our incredible staff is full of people who are passionate about using the library to its fullest as a resource in our community.

Current Library Director Diane Wakefield, who has been with the library for 44 years, said when asked about the future of the library, “I believe the library will continue to thrive. In person programs will always be important, physical books will always be around, and new technology will enhance the services that the library offers. Wise board members, dedicated employees, passionate volunteers, and wonderful patrons from all around the county are what help the library remain such an important part of the community where residents can connect and learn.”
