Now that the harsh winter weather is over, it’s time to prep your home for the year to come. Make sure your home is ready inside and out with this checklist.
- Test and replace batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
- Dust fans and light bulbs and switch ceiling fan rotation
- Deep clean the carpet
- Inspect the attic for any roof leaks
- Check the basement for water damage
- Change HVAC air filters
- Check locks on doors and windows
- Clean and repair window and door screens
- Inspect caulking around tubs, sinks, and windows
- Powerwash vinyl siding
- Wash windows
- Examine any exterior surfaces that may need resealed or painted and start the process
- Clean up outdoor furniture Check the foundation for any cracks
- Inspect the sprinkler system and make any necessary repairs
- Look for missing shingles or damage to the roof
- Every year or two, reseal any exterior woodwork, such as decks and pergolas
- Check for leaks in indoor and outdoor pipes
- Remove trapped sediment from water heater tank
- Inspect the driveway or any pathways and repair as needed
- Clean the clothes dryer vent
- Ensure all stair treads and rails are sturdy Prep your lawn mower and other yard maintenance equipment
- Examine the fireplace for damage Rake out old debris and leaves (and apply for your yard waste permit!)
- After the last frost has passed, have your gutters and down-spouts cleaned and repaired
- Trim trees or shrubs that are near the house and any important outside coils
