Hungry For More
The 2017-18 rendition of the Bobcats Girls Varsity Basketball team was a rousing success as they earned Section Co-Champion honors and made a trip to the WPIAL finals.
This will be the 10th season at the helm for Coach Greg Huston. The Bobcats lost 3 experienced starters to graduation but Huston believes his youthful roster is ready to compete now. Senior Qhamille Monteiro and Sophomore Emma Pavelek will be called upon to help replace the scoring and leadership lost to graduation. “Emma Pavelek will open a lot of eyes this season. She had a great freshman season…this year, she will be the go-to player and I think she’s ready for that,” says Huston.
Coach also expects sophomore guard Maddi Weiland to make a big jump this year and become a key contributor, “Maddi really came on at the end of last season to earn some minutes”
In order for this team to meet the standard of success set on the court by previous teams, they will have to learn on the job as Coach Huston will integrate a bevy of young players into his rotation with little to no varsity experience. Sophomores Natalie Priest, Anna Blum and Kenzie Weiland will all be counted on to grow quickly along with talented 9th grader Payton List.
“We are extremely young and raw at most positions. We have all the necessary pieces, but there will be growing pains as we try to figure out how to win close, tough games,” Says Huston.
“Varsity will be a new experience for almost our whole team, so it’ll be a matter of how quickly we make the adjustment.”
With a talented young roster and buoyed by a strong youth program, Coach Huston is excited about the direction of his program, “We hope that our WPIAL Finals appearance keeps the young kids excited and we hope to get back there again in the near future.”
